I moved to Maryland a few years ago from LA.  While living in LA, I had this strange fascination with hamburgers.  Here are the restaurants in the greater LA area (only one is actually in LA proper) that serve my favorite burgers.  In no specific order...(I don't think that I would really rank them, because they are all so different.) 

 

APPLE PAN (10801 Pico Blvd - East of Westwood Blvd, LA's Westside)

 

 

Apple Pan is a lunch counter and a few tables, there is often a wait outside.  Going to this place is like going back in time.  The mostly older male staff wear paper hats and ring up your order with a cash register that must be original to its 1947 opening. At Apple Pan, you will find a classic burger and even apple pie for dessert, a la mode if you like.

 

 

Father's Office (1018 Montana Ave.  Santa Monica, CA) website 

 

 

 

This beer and wine bar serves up a burger that I would definately call gourmet.  The Office burger is a patty of fine dry-aged beef  topped with caramelized onions, Gruyère and Maytag blue cheeses, applewood-smoked bacon compote and arugula served on a soft roll. ABSOLUTELY NO SUBSTITUTIONS allowed at Father's Office.  I was a bit hesitate because I am not a fan of blue cheese, but one bite won me over.  Father's Office is always crowded.  People usually line up before it opens.  It is very loud with only one enclosed booth suitable for conversation.  There are lots of other things on their menu, but I only go there for the burger.

 

Pie 'n Burger (913 E. California Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91106) website

 

 

 

Pie 'n Burger is a small diner like restaurant, no frills.  It has great classic burgers with all the desired toppings.  Make sure you save room for pie!  They have the largest selection of pies, I have ever seen.  Definately, something for everyone.  Pie 'n Burger was recently featured in promotions for the movie, The Waitress (Keri Russell made pies here on some morning show).
