Well, since the directions are "have fun", I guess what I want to write about is an upcoming mini-trip my husband and I have been planning with the kids.
Last year we were all up and having breakfast on February 2 when the CNN coverage of the Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney caught our attention. We started joking about making a pilgrimage to Gobbler's Knob but then we thought "Hey, why not? It's only a couple of hours drive." So over the past few months, we have been steadily planning our silly little road trip.
Groundhog Day falls on a Saturday this year. Since hotels in Punxsutawney are booked years in advance, we are actually staying at a hotel in Indiana, Pa. which is about 30 minutes away.
Friday we will send the kids to school for a short while so they can get their assignments for the day and get credit for attendance. Then we'll pick the kids up early and head north to Johnstown first. We hope to be in Johnstown by 10:30am. There we'll visit the Johnstown Flood Museum. This is something we've wanted to see for a while.
Then north again to Indiana. We chose Indiana because I am a huge Jimmy Stewart fan and Jimmy Stewart grew up in Indiana, Pa. There is a museum there dedicated to him. We want to be in Indiana by 3:00 so we have a couple of hours at the Jimmy Stewart Museum before it closes at 5:00. Then we can check into our hotel, have a relaxing dinner, and let the kids swim in the pool.
For the ride up, I plan to charge the portable DVD player and take lots of Jimmy Stewart movies (Rear Window is our favorite) and, of course, Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. If the kids haven't watched Groundhog Day in the car yet, we'll watch it before we go to bed. We have to get to bed early because we have to get up at 3am. The Punxsutawney website says you have to be at one of the Gobblers Knob shuttles by 4:30am at the latest.
There are fireworks at dawn and lots of activities for the kids. The website says they get about 30,000 - 35,000 visitors for Groundhog's Day so it looks like it will be pretty busy. We'll spend the day in Punxsutawny and let the kids do all the activities then we'll crash Saturday night again in Indiana. Sunday, we'll get up, have a leisurely breakfast, and head home. I can't wait to get my official Punxsutawny Phil t-shirt!!
