The Places in Between The Prince of the Marshes
These are two excellent books if you want to get a warm, fuzzy feeling about Afganistan and Iraq. The author, Rory Stewart has lived the life and walked in the shoes of the people of these places. It is often disturbing but it will bring the places home to the reader in a way that can only help to understand what is happening there.
If you haven't read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, you should try to do so. This book, though not so warm and fuzzy, gives a woman's perspective to life in Afghanistan. It is unforgetable!
